Every political compass decides its axes before anyone answers a question.
This one found them: five dimensions, measured in the responses of
37,583 people, not assumed in advance.
Fifty questions, about six minutes. You get a position on each axis
with its error bar, because a dot claims a precision no
questionnaire has.
One of these is not like the others. Institutional trust turns out to
be close to statistically independent of both ideology and party — two
people with identical politics can sit at opposite ends of it. A two-axis
compass cannot see it at all. That is the main reason this exists.
Close to, not exactly: within a single survey year the correlation with
self-reported ideology runs from −0.17 to +0.09, and its sign follows
whoever holds the presidency. That is a tenth of what the redistribution
axis scores, and it is not zero.
Keys 1–5
Somebody else’s result
A position somebody shared with you
This is where their answers put them on
the five axes. It is not your result, and it shows less than
they saw: a shared link carries five numbers and nothing else, so there are
no error bars here and no comparison to the country. Theirs had both.
Fifty statements, about six minutes.
Your result is worked out in this page and stays here unless you choose
otherwise.
The link you followed contains only those five rounded scores. It carries no
name, no identifier and nothing about who sent it, and opening it told
nobody — this page contacted no server to show you the position above.
Your position
Five axes, each with its error bar
What put you there
The answers that moved each axis furthest. Change one of these and your
position moves; the rest barely matter.
For scale
Twenty figures placed on these same axes, as reference
points. These are conjecture, not measurement - nobody here answered
the questionnaire, and each placement is a judgement about what a
documented body of thought implies about a modern statement. They are here
to make the axes legible, not to tell you who you are.
Contribute your answers
Every box is optional and none of them changes your
result. They are here because a self-selected sample says nothing about a
country without something to weigh it against, and the national survey
these axes came from records the same wide bands.
